Introduction
Living with type 2 diabetes has its challenges that all of us living with the disease must be aware of if we wish to have a quality of life living with diabetes.
One potential impact is developing chronic kidney disease, and one of the culprits is too much salt. We all love to add salt to our foods to flavour them. But are there alternatives where we can, as the saying goes, “have our cake and eat it too?”
Yes, there are alternatives.
What are Some Alternatives
Putting the challenge out, here are some of the alternatives to using salt.
The most popular alternative to sodium is Mrs. Dash seasoning, by far! (And it’s available in multiple flavors!).
Various herbs were a close second. One person claimed to have more than 100 different spices in her cabinet! A few people told us that some spices, including coriander, created a salty flavor for them.
For me, lemon pepper is a long-time favourite,
Fresh and dried herbs and vegetables also add flavour. Many people specified their fondness for onions, peppers, garlic, coriander, and celery.
Lemon and lime juice were also popular alternatives. And the colourful zest of these fruits can provide an even more intense flavour when added to foods.
Vinegar is popular, too.
A dash of dry white wine goes a long way. It adds acidity.
Most Important
Reducing salt takes planning and vigilance, but the benefits are well worth it. And especially for us with type 2 diabetes, do we really want to add chronic kidney disease to our healthcare basket?
The End
Think salt when you shop, cook, and eat. Keeping sodium in check can be challenging but can also lead to a world of wonderful flavours and significant benefits, including lowering blood pressure and chronic kidney disease. It comes to taking the challenge of lowering salt intake and opening new doors to new flavours by trying some of the alternatives provided above.
And remember, the best place to start is to read the labels for salt content on anything you may want to buy.
Best wishes from all of us .....
